Minutes of the Stanford Meeting

August 26, 1957

The meeting was called to order by chairman, C. M. Rick at 5 PM, August 27., 1957 in Room 1A, Inner Quadrangle, Stanford University. Ten members were present.

Recent activities and financial condition of the TGC were reviewed by the chairnan. The current status of linkage work was discussed. Recent findings have required one change in the assignment of chromosomes. Progress in the present organization seems satisfactory, yet it is clear that the present setup has not been operating long enough to permit a proper evaluation. The TGC treasury at the time of the meeting stood at $152.72.

Anson Thompson presented a report on the organization and activities of the Tomato Breeders Group. This group was recently formed for the purpose of holding periodic meetings to discuss problems of mutual interest in tomato breeding. At present the group represents the Midwest, East, and Southeast. It was suggested that TGC 8 include a brief report on the activities of the Tomato Breeders Group and also of STEP.

It was pointed out that the meeting in Montreal in 1958 of the International Genetics Congress might provide a good opportunity for another meeting of the TGC. The conflict in timing between this meeting and that of the AIBS with the affiliated American Society for Horticultural Science and the Botanical Society of America presents a problem in respect to attendance by TGC members. The Coordinating Committee will be obliged to make a decision in this matter.

R. K. Soost, pointing out that in certain environments particular mutants are difficult to identify, suggested that a special section of TGC Reports might be reserved for tips on identification of mutants. As an example of the usefulness of such information, Soost mentioned that, thanks to advice from J. W. Lesley, 1\1 can be identified in flower under a wide range of conditions by the yellow color of its stigma.

The meeting was adjourned at 6 PM.
