Allele tests between gh and ab.

Thompson, A.E. and C. M. Rick.

Pollen was excanged by us through the mails early in 1956 in order to make early allele tests between these independently occurring mutants reported in TGC 6. Pollen of gh/gh and gh/+ was sent to Urbana and pollen of ab/ab was sent to Davis. Crosses succeeded at both places and the progeny tests are summarized in the following table.

                                    Additional seedlings
                                    that died in early stages
                    +/- gh/gh likely gh/gh
                 ________________________________________________

Tests at Urbana
 ab/ab x gh/gh 0 19 5
 ab/ab x gh/+ 40 7 3

Tests at Davis
 gh/+ x ab/ab 10 9
These tests leave no doubt that ab and gh are allelic, although they do not decide whether or not they are different alleles. The weakness of some of the chlorotic seedlings suggests that the deficiency of gh segregants in the ab/ab x gh/+ lot may have been caused by inviability. We propose that the symbol ah (ghost) be recognized for this locus.
