FOREWORD

The Tomato Genetics Cooperative is a group of workers who have a common interest in tomato genetics and who are organized informally for the purpose of exchanging information and stocks. Participation is voluntary, and costs of activities are met by assessments of members.

The year 1956 saw continued growth in the activities and membership of the TGC. The number of members increased from 179 as of January 1, 1956 to 198 as of January 1, 1957. Along with the frequent communications about membership affairs, we also have been receiving a steady stream of requests for backnumbers. The supply of TGC 2 has been exhausted for some time, and we may reach the limit of TGC 1 before long.

Further progress was made during 1956 in the organization of research on the tomato linkage groups. As indicated on the following page, the investigation of specified linkage groups and special projects were assigned to members who volunteered for the work. Since more help is needed with the larger groups and a few remaining unassigned groups, we would greatly appreciate additional volunteers.

The TGC continues to maintain a favorable financial status. According to the audit in this issue, the balance as of December 31, 1956 stood at $86.67.

For the last half of 1956, chairman C. M. Rick was on sabbatical leave in South America. In his absence assembling and preparing TGC 7, in addition to routine affairs of the TGC, have been in the very capable hands of Dora G. Hunt, assisted by David Pratt and Carl Clayberg. Virginia Borelli typed the stencils. The membership owes a special debt of thanks to these willing helpers for bearing this unusually large burden of work.

Three hundred copies of this report have been issued.
