Origin of the Webb Special (Black Queen) tomato.

Reynard, G. B.

References to the Webb Special tomato by E. A. Kerr (TGC 5:20, 1955) and A. E. Thompson (Science 121:896-897, June 24, 1955), prompted this note on the source of the variety. It was found as a single plant "rogue" in an unknown variety in 1917, by a Mr. Webb at the Campbell Soup Co. farms, Riverton, New Jersey, where Mr. Webb was employed at the time. Current investigations here with the variety and other varieties or selections having darker than average immature fruit or foliage color indicate that there may be four or more genes associated with the darkening effect.
