Exserted, ex\1?

Pollack, B. L.

A single plant having functionally sterile blosoms (ps) with exserted styles was noted in 1951 in a segregating population of JBS (ps) X LT 902. Selfed seed saved from this plant and grown for eight subsequent generations in both field and greenhouse have verified the genetic stability of this character. Although a test for allelism has not yet been made, this mutant differs from that described by Rick (TGC 1:15) in that all blossoms produce untwisted styles which protrude almost a quarter inch beyond the anther cone and that ovule fertolity after hand pollination approaches 100%. Inheritance studies to data indicate the possibility that more than one gene is involved in the expression of this character. Transfer of this character to commercial varieties for use in hybrid seed production is now in progress.
