Previously Rick (1983) reported two L. peruvianum accessions (LA 1708 and LA 2172) which could be crossed with L. esculentum. Lindhout and Purimahua (1988) concluded that L. peruvianum accessions LA 1708 and LA 2172 are crossable with L. esculentum but not with other L. peruvianum accessions. Similar results were obtained, at "La Selva" Experiment Station, located at Rionegro (Antioquia, Colombia), with LA 1708 in the sense that is crossable with different L. esculentum varieties (cvs "Licato" and Alcobaca") as well as L. esculentum var. cerasiforme lines LA 2402 and LA 2394, when the former is used as male parent.
One self-incompatible adult plant was obtained from the cross LA 2394 x LA 1708. When LA 1708 was crossed with other L. peruvianum, no normal seeds were obtained, but when the hybrid was pollinated with the peruvianum accessions, normal, germinable, seeds were obtained. The above points out the possibility of using the interspecific hybrid as genetic bridge between esculentum and peruvianum. Also the backcross between LA 2394 x LA 1708 yielded seed when crossed with L. peruvianum as male parent. The obtained results are included in Table 1.
