Minutes of the Penn State Meeting

August 31, 1959

The attendance was 22, and the chairman was Dr. Leonard Butler . A letter from Dr. C. M. Rick giving the latest membership and financial statement was read. Then the problem of symbols for various genes was considered. It was suggested that the symbol Pi which had been substituted for Tr be discarded and the Ph or Phy be used instead. The motion to this effect was made by Lloyd Lyall and seconded by Bill Shumovich. It was felt that future genes for resistance to Phytophthora should be characterized by numerical subscripts in order of their discovery. Dr. Barham suggested that any fature revisions that are necessary because the symbols do not follow standard nomenclature, be made by the committee. Ernie Kerr suggested that, since H/+ is usually scored in opposite way from MacArthur's original, this symbol be changed. Dr. Butler suggested that it be left unchanged for the present, but that since Dr. Kerr is in charge of the linkage work for this chromosome, he could change it when he publishes a revision of this linkage group.

There was a discussion of T. O. Graham's paper on the blood lines of different commercial varieties. It was pointed out that it is desirable to get as much information along these lines as possible, and some co-operation was promised.

Dr. Reynard put forward a scheme to explain the different intensities of green found in uniform green fruits, and he was urged to write a complete report on this for TGC 10.
