Relationship between fruit size and blossom set.

Kuyper, C. K. and R. J. Hall.

In 1959 a study relative to fruit weight and blossom set on seven varieties revealed that a linear inverse relationship between percent of blossoms set and average fruit weight seems to exist. It was observed that as average fruit weight increases the percentage of blossoms actually setting fruit decreases. This relationship is exemplified by the following table and graph:

          % of blossoms Average fruit
Variety set which formed weight in pounds
code fruit of individual fruits

C59 76 0.18
C52 71 0.19
C50 60 0.26
C51 59 0.26
C23-4 51 0.31
C23-7 48 0.36
C49 43 0.48

These data would seem to indicate a genetical linkage or a physiological association between fruit size and percentage of blossoms which set fruit. The possibility of genetical linkage may warrant investigation.
