Seedling identification.
Chiscon, J. A.
The following traits are characteristic of seedlings containing the given combinations of chlorophyll mutations.
md;pa -- The seedlings resemble but are shorter than md. The cotyledons and first leaflets have lighter green midribs. md;yg\4 -- This seedling is difficult to distinguish. The cotyledons and leaves are yellower than yg\4. Mottling is very light. md;yo -- The cotyledons are yellower thah yo or md. The mottling effect is lighter. md;pl -- The cotyledons and first leaflets are a .... yellow-green than either md or pl. The seedlings are indistinguishable from pl during the first few days following germination. The cotyledons eventually lose much of their green color and the seedlings become slower in growth. md;yg\2;yo -- The cotyledons and leaflets are yellow-white. All the triple mutants obtained died in the seedling stage. nd;pl -- The cotyledons are the same shade as yg\3. The first leaflets resemble nd. nd;yg\3 -- The cotyledons are the same shade as yg\3. The first leaflets resemble nd. pl;yo -- The seedlings are etiolated. The cotyledons are small and a lighter shade of yellow-green than either yo or pl. The first leaflets are yellow-white. yg2;yo -- The leaflets have yellow-white patches. yg3;yo -- The cotyledons and first leaflets are more yellow-green than yg\3 or yo. The leaflets are curled up at first. The hypocotyl resembles yo in that it has a smaller amount of visible anthocyanin. yg\3;yg\4 -- We have not been able to identify this seedling. A greater number of yg\3 seedlings are obtained in segregating flats (see F2 data). It is possible the double mutants are in this group. This would be surprising since yg\4 is a more "severe" mutation than yg\3.
